Ovarian Cysts

It is a sac containing fluid or other tissue that forms inside or on the female ovary. They are more common in childbearing ages. Different sizes and different numbers of ovarian cysts can occur at the same time. Benign ovarian cysts, which are very common, are harmless and disappear on their own over time without treatment. Ovarian cysts very rarely become cancerous.

Some drugs are used in the treatment. However, in some cases, the cyst becomes very large, begins to cause discomfort to the patient and tends to become cancerous, then it may need to be surgically removed. Surgical treatment is planned according to the type and size of the cyst, age and complaints of the patient, family history of ovarian or breast cancer, and having children. The surgery can be done closed or open. If only the cyst is removed without removing the ovary by surgery, it is called a cystectomy. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove one of the ovaries (oophorectomy) to remove the cyst.
